Cycling; Getting Australia Moving Report Launched
The launch of the Cycling: Getting Australia Moving Report was held at
Old Parliament House, Canberra on 4 June. The Cycling Promotion Fund
was commissioned by the Australian Government Department of Health and
Ageing to develop this report on cycling participation by Australian
adults.
The report identified that cycling offers significant potential to
increase physical activity levels in adults but that there are barriers
to greater cycling participation by adults, including individual lack
of skills, confidence and knowledge; social and cultural factors; urban
design and bicycle infrastructure; safety concerns; and transport and
land use policies. Recommendations made by the report to overcome these
barriers are:
Mass marketing campaigns to promote the benefits of cycling.
Bicycle education programs to increase confidence and skill levels of the population.
Behaviour change programs such as Ride to School and Ride to Work
programs to support adults and children in cycling including commuting.
Cycling events to create a supportive social environment for cycling.
Urban design to create more a physical environment more conducive to cycling
Improved bicycle infrastructure to provide enjoyable, safe and attractive on and off road cycling facilities.
Funding support from all levels of government to better reflect the role and value of cycling.

The Minister for the Environment, Heritage and the Arts, The Hon Peter
Garrett AM MP also announced a grant of $45 000 for the development
of a national cycling training scheme to encourage more people to take
up cycling.
