Following the trend
set in European cities such as Paris and London, Brisbane
may become the first city in Australia to establish a bike hire scheme, with
the city's council launching a call for proposals for the project. Lord Mayor
Campbell Newman said "The gist is you'd be a member of the bike hire scheme like
you are (a member of) our libraries.
"There'll be bike (stations) every
300m in the inner parts of Brisbane and in terms of the price structure, it
could be similar to Paris, where the first half-hour is free." Mr Newman said
the initial stage of the project would have 2000 bikes at 150 stations across
inner-city Brisbane, from Newstead in the inner-north to the University of
Queensland at St Lucia in the city's southwest.
It would include the CBD
but would leave out Spring Hill, because of the suburb's steep hills. No mention
is made in the press releases of how the helmet situation will be handled.
