Melbourne Transport Strategy
In
his recent report to the Victorian Government on a Melbourne transport
blueprint Sir Rod Eddington outlined a program costing $18 million, of
which $60 million would be allocated to cycling infrastructure.
The
$60 million is the estimate for 7 projects to upgrade or establish
bike paths. Eddington also proposes bike hire schemes for the city and
major suburban centres, that all new roads and infrastructure
developments include a walking and cycling component and that the
Victorian Government adopt a “whole of government “ approach with the
purpose of making cycling viable for short trips.
The amount set
aside for cycling is a small part of the total proposal but at least
recognizes that cycling has a role to play in the future transport for
the city.
Like many reports that have gone before it the key is whether any of the proposals come to fruition.
